Any topic (writer’s choice)

Write a formal internal proposal in memo format that proposes the topic and genre for your Project Applying Knowledge text on cross-cultural or ethical business communication. Reflect on your choices and techniques

Your audience for this proposal is me, your instructor (think of me as a boss). Your purpose is to convince me that you have thought carefully about the rhetorical situation of your Project 4 text and have planned accordingly. Your purpose is also to demonstrate your proficiency in writing memos and proposals.

(project 4 content:
Share your research into one topic of cross-cultural or ethical communication with your colleagues (classmates) in a new genre.

All business writers must be aware of rhetorical differences between cultures as well as ethical concerns for writing. This assignment is an opportunity for you to research an aspect of cross-cultural or ethical written communication.)

STEP 1: DECIDE TOPIC & FOCUS

Come up with a topic and focus for your Project 4. Chapters 5.6 Writing for Diversity And 5.7 Writing Ethically mention many aspects of cross-cultural and ethical communication, such as directness, organizational patterns, persuasive strategies, legal constraints, etc.

For your text, you will identify one specific topic related to written (not oral) communication.

PROPOSAL CONTENT
Your proposal must have the following sections.

INTRODUCTION

Your introduction should include:

a teaching problem for me as the instructor of the class (think about what I cannot cover in our 10-week (online!) quarter)
a writing problem for your classmates as new business writers
a writing problem for you as a new business writer who has not had a chance to learn the specific business genre that you will practice in Project 4
a brief overview of your proposed solution (e.g. writing and sharing your genre with specific information)
PROBLEM & SIGNIFICANCE …OF TOPIC

This section should do the following:

Discuss a problem for me as the audience of the proposal and your instructor. Again, consider how I cannot teach all topics in a limited amount of time.
Identify and discuss a problem for your classmates as new business writers. Discuss why this problem is significant enough that it should be covered in our limited 10-week quarter.
Tips for This Section:

Your discussion of the problem and its significance should be developed with specific details and examples.
This section should also contain research that supports your claims about the problem and significance.
Focus this section on negatives as you are discussing a problem. You will give the positive (i.e. benefits) later in your proposal.
PROBLEM & SIGNIFICANCE ……OF GENRE

This section should do the following:

Discuss a problem for me as the audience of the proposal and your instructor. Again, consider how I cannot teach all topics in a limited amount of time.
Identify and discuss the genre you have not had a chance to yet practice as a developing business writer (the genre you will use for Project 4); include specific writing conventions and rhetorical choices with which you are not yet familiar. Discuss why this genre is important to practice.
SOLUTION & GENRE CONTENT

Your solution should make clear that:

You are proposing to compose and share a genre that will cover topics not addressed in class
The information in your genre will help your classmates to be stronger business writers
Practicing the genre will help you to be a stronger business writer
You have done careful research into both the topic and the chosen genre
Tips for This Section:

The discussion of the solution and genre content should be developed with specific details and examples. You do not need to give me your entire document, but I should have a clear idea of the structure and content.
Remember that this section should show a clear connection with how you have described the problem in your previous section.
BENEFITS

Your benefits section should include the following:

The benefits for the instructor
The benefits for your classmates
The benefits for you as a writer of the genre
Specific details and examples
Research that provides convincing evidence of your stated benefits.
Tips for This Section:

Again, this section should explicitly connect to your previous sections.
Focus on the positives, and do not repeat the problem.
CONCLUSION

Your conclusion should show a “spirit of cooperation.” A spirit of cooperation is to show that you are willing to cooperate with your audience. It can be as simple as “I am happy to answer any questions you may have.” You should also make clear that you are asking the audience for something when restating the:

problem
solution
benefits
REFERENCES

Since you are required to do research for this project, you will have sources that you consulted for your proposal. Thus, a list of references should be included after your conclusion. You may use any citation style (APA, MLA, etc.).
